Urban Gleaning and Love Packs

Urban Gleaning
“When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of the field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and the alien”
Leviticus 23:22

The Warehouse is often perceived as a place where unwanted items can be donated to the poor. However, we are more interested in exploring the development of an urban twenty-first century version of the gleaning concept described in Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Gleaning met the needs of the poor without destroying their dignity; we would like to see that take place in our communities.

Consequently, The Warehouse wants to promote considered generosity. Rather than simply clearing out garages and storerooms in the hope that some of the contents will be of use, we are seeking to ask God, and encourage you to ask God, what He calling us to give away.We are delighted to help you in this process.

We accept the following:

  • Clean clothes in good condition
  • Bedding, beds, mattresses etc
  • Functional household appliances

We do accept items such as computers, books, kitchenware but would like to discuss the items before delivery. Please do not be offended if we can’t use your items; but we do not want to become a dump yard.

Love Packs

In partnership with Fikelela, the Diocese of Cape Town HIV/AIDS initiative, we provide over 400 food, hygiene and care packs each month to families infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, and to those caring for orphans and vulnerable children. The packs are intended to provide physical relief through crisis periods for adults and children being cared for through Parish AIDS Task Teams, and Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) support groups in poor communities. Churches and individuals throughout the Diocese donate Love Packs, which are distributed within the communites of Elsies River, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Paarl and Khayelitsha.

The Warehouse co-ordinates the warehousing and logistics of love pack distribution. The packs are regularly distributed via volunteer support groups at churches in the relevant communities to support families and individuals until they have obtained appropriate goverment grants. Parish AIDS Task Teams donate the majority of packs distributed each month, and they also organise teams of volunteers at The Warehouse to collate and prepare the packs for distribution.

We are currently distributing almost 1000 packs on average a month, this is double the number of packs that were being distributed at the end of 2006. The steady growth in distribution means that the need for regular donation of packs is growing! Each pack costs about R65. If you would like to donate a pack/packs each month, please see the list of contents.
