What is uHambo?
uHambo (meaning ‘the journey’) is a six-month formation journey for church leaders, women leaders, and emerging practitioners who sense a deep calling to serve their communities with faithfulness, courage, and imagination. Rooted in lived experience, critical theology, and community praxis, uHambo invites leaders to slow down, read their context honestly, and respond with grounded, Spirit-led action. Through a hybrid forma of in-person and online sessions, participants gain practical tools, mentorship, and a supportive network committed to justice, peace, and sustainable community transformation.
Why uHambo?
uHambo exists because many church and community leaders carry a deep desire to respond to injustice, poverty, and social fragmentation — yet often lack the space, tools, and accompaniment to do so sustainably. Too often theology is disconnected from lived reality, and community initiatives are launched without deep reflection or long-term support. uHambo bridges this gap by forming leaders who can read their context critically, engage faith thoughtfully, and initiate practical, justice-rooted action in their communities. It is a journey that strengthens both the inner life of leadership and the outward work of transformation.

Who is uHambo for?

Specifically, uHambo is designed for:
- Church leaders and pastors seeking to integrate faith, justice, and community engagement
- Women leaders already carrying leadership in churches or community spaces
- Young leaders and emerging practitioners discerning their vocation and next steps
- Community-based leaders rooted in local struggles and everyday realities
We especially welcome leaders from under-resourced and marginalised contexts who are already active—formally or informally—in their communities and are ready to deepen their theological grounding, sharpen practical tools, and move toward just, sustainable action.
uHambo may not be suitable for those looking for a low-commitment programme, a purely academic course, or a once-off workshop experience.

Leaders engage in immersion, pilgrimage, and community mapping to understand the social, economic, and historical realities shaping their communities.
Theological Formation

Development Frameworks & Tools
Leaders are equipped with practical tools that strengthen their ability to respond effectively to community challenges. These include needs & asset analyses and resource mobilisation strategies.
Leadership Formation
The programme cultivates servant leadership, accountability, mentoring capacity, and long-term sustainability.
Project Formation
Each participant develops a context-based project concept and presents it at the end of the journey.
Reflection & Ongoing Mentorship
uHambo does not end with the final presentation. The journey transitions into ongoing mentorship and peer connections — beginning of a longer journey.
Why uHambo Matters?
Leadership transformation has multiplier effects. When one leader is deeply formed, congregations begin to shift culture, young people are intentionally mentored, and sustainable community networks are strengthened. A single leader who integrates faith and justice differently can influence preaching, decision-making, resource allocation, and the overall posture of a church toward its surrounding community. In under-resourced contexts especially, access to high-quality theological and leadership formation is often limited. uHambo creates structured, relational, and contextually grounded formation that many leaders would otherwise not be able to access.
